It’s time, long over due! I have been finally getting settled in and keeping busy in my new environment. Ajijic Mexico is very peaceful and has a lot of natural things that can be offered. As I walk the streets and explore the new surroundings, I have come along a lot of creatures of nature.
Tuesday while we were walking back from the organic market, we were surprised to see a horse outside a fence on the side of the road just glazing and eating the grass. Dan made a remark, saying that this is the way the Mexicans mow their grass. I had to take a picture of it, to show the true meaning of how cost saving it is to have nature cut the grass for you.
As we come back from the organic markets we find all kinds of unique things and if you know me, I love taking pictures of them. I really like capturing unusual things that you would not ever think about. For example, every place I lived either in Florida or here there are ants everywhere. Well, I have never seen them as big as I seen this one the other day. I just had to take a picture of this…. Check it out ~ Have you ever seen an ant this big!! Someone stated to Dan that they only survive up to 24 hours. I am sure glad that I am not one of those ants.
One day last week as Dan and I were relaxing looking over the cliff, there was this bird that we spotted that was yellow, my favorite color. I truly fell in love with this bird being full of sunshine and energy.
Every morning I am awaken by the birds that tweet all around our complex. It’s so cheerful and a pleasure to wake up to birds singing.
Well I am off to work on my organic garden, I have these plans in mind and I am excited to share it with all of you once it is done. Put here is a picture of before and soon I will take a picture of the finished product. What I have been doing is every time I go to the organic market I get an organic herb plant and replant it in my porch along with seeds from my vegetables and fruit and plant them in small containers so when they get big I can replant them in my organic garden…
Dan needs to use the computer so I will say good bye for now, I will keep you up dated on my progress on the garden.

Yesterday Dan and I were invited by Marco to visit an organic farm in Ajijic, Mexico. This organic farm specialized in blackberries. The owner took us around to the green houses; there are seven huge green houses with several huge blackberry plants along with some other vegetables. I was told the history of how this came about and was amazed by the passion from the owner. He received a grant by a company in Israel for the building of the green houses that were solidly built to last for 30 years.
With a partnership of another person, they have decided to make blackberry jam and jelly. I had the privilege to try some and fell in love with the taste and the fact that there were huge whole blackberries throughout it. The other day I made Dan and I French toast topped with the jam. Yum, it was fabulous.
As our visit continued, Dan and I learned more about the farm and village. We also learned the dream of the owner and how this community will be set up. It was something that I have never heard of before. It will be a community of sustainability. The village will provide a lifestyle that improves and enhances the lives. They are creating an extended family where they will care about each other. The residents will share the common goals of cooperation, self-sufficiency, health, education, and living lightly on the land. Purpose, Mission and ValuesVision: Creating a village for people who want to enjoy life to the fullest. While practicing good health, and engaging in learning, they are also valuing their neighbors as they age.
Mission: Creating an international village where they are connected to their neighbors and are using renewable resources to the fullest extent while enjoying life, and having an adventure while taking care of themselves. They are living together in harmony, being healthy, exercising and constantly learning from themselves and others.
Values: Each person acknowledges that to be part of this community is both a privilege and a responsibility. It is a privilege to choose to come together with others to live and thrive for a common vision. Each of them makes available our experience, strengths, and interests for ongoing personal and community development. Each of them aspires to act from these common values and principles: Community: The village is committed to building community, sharing resources, and sharing a sense of neighborhood. They intend to create a community where they can thrive and belong for a lifetime. They strive for mutual respect among themselves that honors differing viewpoints and beliefs. They believe in the goodness of others. They want to share time and resources with there neighbors in order to meet each other’s needs. They work for the common good of the community. Diversity: They are committed to creating diversity in age, race, ethnicity, income level, sexual orientation, physical ability, and interests. They respect and support the uniqueness and growth of each member and themselves as a group. Individuals: They want to live life to the fullest, to be kind and considerate and to be open and authentic in their relationships; to be truthful and honest. Participation: They are a community in which all residents share the tasks and pleasures of creating and maintaining the physical and social aspects of their common lives. Education: They desire to educate themselves and to help each other grow in life-long learning. Health: To practice health and well-being in choosing a life-style of healthy eating, exercise, people connection, and mental activity.
Helping Others: They want to help others in need and to give back both within and outside the community. Setting an example: They want to set an example for others to follow. To make known our way of life and to show how others may live this way; to leave a legacy. If you are interested in this way of life living in harmony, check out this website www.rancholasaludvillage.com or e-mail rancholasaludvillage@gmail.com.
I am an ordinary person that had a bad encounter of breast cancer. I grew up in the Tampa, Florida area and lived there all my life until now. The unique difference between me and others is I thought outside the box and chose a different approach. I started a blog which was intended for family and friends to see that going to Mexico and choosing Functional Medicine was the right thing to do and that I was very comfortable while not going through any pain and sorrow.
Throughout the two years of managing my disease I continued to write a journal about my home program and the process of my every day life. I wanted to capture this to show, you can live with cancer and still enjoy life while managing this disease. The concept that I wanted was to be realistic and have it be true to the readers.
During this time I also have been on my local news channel, twice for the natural way I took care of myself while eating organic foods and taking my vitamins and minerals to help with my immune system. Here is the website and print showing my story and an update about what I chose to do.http://www.wtsp.com/news/local/article/310159/8/Breast-cancer-survivor-cancer-free-after-alternative-treatment Palm Harbor, FL -- Chemotherapy, radiation, surgery -- it can be hard to know which treatment is best for breast cancer patients. A Palm Harbor woman picked none of the above.
Last February, we told you how Sherry Malin was diagnosed with stage two breast cancer. She went against her doctor's wishes and tried controversial nutrition based experimental treatments at a hospital in Mexico.
10 News Anchor Heather Van Nest talked to her the other day and she says her most recent body scan shows no cancer in her body.
Chemotherapy, radiation and surgery are considered standard treatments.
54 year-old, Sherry Malin, from Palm Harbor wanted to share her story with 10 News viewers to let others know some cancer patients are choosing not to follow conventional treatments.
She went against her doctor's wishes to try an alternative treatment in Mexico.
"I've always said I would not go for chemotherapy because I have seen too much of it."
A mammogram and biopsy in Tampa confirmed stage two breast cancer in her right breast last year. Sherry made the tough decision to go against her doctor's wishes to try what many conventional doctors consider to be controversial, nutrition based, experimental treatments offered at a hospital in Mexico.
She told 10 News Anchor Heather Van Nest it was not scary for her to go against what conventional doctors recommended because she saw too many people go through chemotherapy treatment. Her father, sister and brother all died before the age of 40. She also watched her husband's mother die.
Sherry decided she did not want to go through all of that and she says, if she didn't make it, she wanted to do it on her terms and be able to do what she could during that period of time.
She says cancer was a wake-up call to take better care of herself.
Her treatment plan includes taking dozens of vitamins each day, eating fresh foods and no longer sweating the small stuff.
"I learned to handle stress. Stress has a lot to do with it so nothing bothers me. You don't worry about things.Yes, so if things fall a part... oh well... life goes on I'm still alive."
Sherry found growing her own organic garden in her backyard and choosing to eat fresh foods everyday gave her some control back in her life. Sherry shares her journey on her blog and says this is a personal decision. She says quality of life is most important to her. The nutrition based therapy she had for 3 weeks in Mexico is not covered by insurance and her vitamins/supplements add to the monthly out-of-pocket costs.
Sherry follows up with her doctor here in Tampa. Dr. Peter Walton says he is amazed at how well she is doing considering she did not have surgery or chemotherapy. Her latest CT scan shows no cancer in her chest region.
Last night there was another wedding reception of 120 people on the grounds of Hotel Perico. Dan and I were invited and of course we could not refuse. The night was perfect for an outside event. The breeze flowed through the curtains that each gazebo had placed around them. It was very elegant all white, fit for a princess. The couple lived in Canada before coming back to where they were raised, so the music was very modern, most I had heard in America. The dance floor was laid down with lights blinking throughout it and a tall screen with videos that looked like MTV. The groom said to us to eat, drink, dance, enjoy and become part of the celebration like everyone else. Of course Dan and I brought are own drinks. At the local liquor store we found some organic wine and the other day I made homemade salsa with big red ripe organic tomatoes. I must say it turned out awesome. So we brought some of it along with organic chips. As everyone started to eat, Dan and I took out our food we brought and joined in. After the dinner was over the music and the light show began. The other long term residents of Perico were also invited and we had our very own table. Myself and a couple of girls that also stay there all decided to go up and dance along with the bride and groom. I have made a movie of all the pictures that I took and the fun that Dan and I had with our friends that we met. Of course the party continued through the early morning, Dan and I turned in around mid-night. I have been adventuring out and have run across wonderful people from all over. The people are so warm here and share their stories with us. I fell in love with this area and it has become my little paradise.
The day started out where we went to Chapala to get our finger prints done for our two year resident visa. As usual we were driven down to the immigration building where we were going to meet our representative, and as we met up with her; she of course did not have our paperwork. Tom from Hotel Perico took us to get the paperwork and back to square one. Finally it was Dan and my turn to do our finger prints. It was messy, all our finger tips were covered in black ink but then it was finally over and we went on to better things!!
As we took a stroll into the town of Chapala to the meat market, I of course brought my camera and took pictures of the breath taking areas. There was a boardwalk that Dan and I started to walk along until we got to the pier and then took another direction to the meat market.
After getting our steaks that were grass feed for an amazing amount of just $2.55 American dollars we were off to the dentist. Two days ago one of my fillings fell out and I had to get something done to save the tooth. We took a cab to Wal-Mart were I went into to get tooth paste and a brush so when we got to the dentist I could clean my teeth before he began.
We just made it in time and checked in at the front office, where there was paper work to be filled out. To make a long story short, the dentist advised me in broken English that I would need a crown. At that time I stated that I would need to ask my husband for he has the money…. The dentist laughed and left to get him. After consulting we agreed to start to prepare for the crown. It will only cost $425.00 for total cost. We were surprised for the same procedure in the states was over $3,000.00.
Onward and upward we made another appointment and walked back to Wal-Mart to catch another cab home. I rested up for awhile and then started dinner. We were going to have steak ~ Yummy. It’s now dinner time so until next time, have a great week and enjoy the pictures that were taken
Today Dan took me to the Escaramuza performance in Ajijic. The word Escaramuza in Spanish means skirmish. Another meaning is, “Riding from the heart.” It was a combination of equestrian skills, handcrafted tack, beautiful costumes, music and food. It is a rich heritage of living folk traditions dating back hundreds of years. I found it breath taking and very colorful. The riding is dangerous and precise. I watched the women saying prayers before performance. I had no way to gather information on this event. All I have to share with you is the photos and the joy I had while watching them. Most of the women on the horses were very young. Some looked like they were young teenagers. I was impressed with their skills and determination. The show began with all the riders and their horses being together along with music and people standing for the Mexican National Anthem, it was very moving. It was obvious that a great deal of planning and effort went into this event. Everything has to be perfectly timed. I only saw one time when two horses bumped into each other. Fortunately, one girl fell but was not hurt. The performance was something that I never saw before and was a great Mother’s Day outing. I enjoyed the talent and bravery of each one of the girls. It took hard work and training to put on the performance that they exhibited. An amazing job!!!!
I have no regrets and have moved on in life while becoming more and more knowledgeable on how to manage my health issues. As time goes by I will continue to share my experience with my followers as I explore my new journey in Mexico. It seems like it was all a blur and sometimes I wished it was a dream, but this gave me the strength to be able to share my experience and speak out that there are other types of treatments other then the traditional ways. Time goes by so fast; it is hard to believe that it will be three years when I got the shocking news that I had cancer. Through it all I have gained strength and no longer fear for I can control what I eat and how I live. As I have shared my life’s ups and downs throughout my journey with cancer, I also tried to share natural and healthy ways and gain knowledge on how to take care of ones body. First and most important it is up to you and it is your choice, so think about what you do before it affects your health.
Today Dan and I went to the organic market and picked up some vegetables and fish. From there we walked to downtown Ajijic to an organic coffee shop to enjoy a cup of coffee. We were disappointed prior, for while we were at the organic market we found that the organic restaurant that we went to two years ago went out of business. We spoke to Peter the past owner, who was there selling Sheppard’s pie and blueberry tarts among other things. He states to us that he misses his old customers but always had a hard time keeping help and that he had been running the business for eight years. It is hard to say good bye to The Secret Garden but I understand. The restaurant was both vegetarian and organic and the public is not educated well on the benefits of eating these ways, even though they may hear about the chemical sprays that are in our food sources. Knowledge is power and we have to think about what the side effects will be.
When I got home I had a follower that was interested in what I did to manage my cancer, he could not find it on my blog so I am going to give a short description of what I did. If you are also interested in what I did you can go to the blog archive on the right hand side and click on 2011. Then click where the number 367 is and go in January where the journey begins and work your way to newer posts.
MY STORY As I sit in wonder, I look back throughout this year and realized how blessed I am to be alive. As it went one winter day last December I was diagnosed with breast cancer. My body became paralyzed with fear for my father and other relatives have died from cancer. Would I be the next one to be taken of this disease? After speaking with my husband and my daughter we as a team decided to not listen to my surgeon and have the surgery with chemo and radiation, but to find another way out.
With lots of research on the computer my husband found my way out ~ its called FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE. Well, with awesome doctors and a great program I managed my cancer and as of last week the CT scan and lab work has a positive note, no cancer.
I can’t say how humble I feel for I did not have the pain from surgery nor did I get sick and lose my hair. My treatments consisted of heat and oxygen treatments and at the worst I had flu like symptoms.
As I turn through the pages of my past year, I have gained spiritually as well as mentally and physically from the experiences of cancer. I have gained a lot of knowledge through incredible top rated people and through this sharing with others; the hope and comfort it brought me.
Cancer can be controlled, but you need to treat it with respect. You need to know what you are dealing with and how to treat it daily. Its learning how to reorganize what’s important to our bodies and lives we lead. As I close~ I will let you on a secret! It’s your choice and you need to take control of the issue not leave it up to others to make the decisions for you. I started with a program that enhanced the quality of my life by first changing the way I ate and drank. I learned ways to meditate to release stress and made time to exercise. It’s those important steps that maintain hope of never seeing cancer again.
We need to stand up to what is affecting us, the environment, and face the final curtain by thinking out side the box and realizing what we are working with.
Through my words on my blog www.thejourneytogoodhealth.blogspot.com , I am hoping it will give you a better understanding of how to treat cancer within your body. As I regroup my personal life, I will continue to manage my cancer and help any others that are going through it with the support of my heart. I am a survivor of knowledge and not of cancer. I will not let it control my body and mind. Individually we are a drop, but together we can create an ocean, let’s start now ~ it’s your choice.
Courage is standing face to face with fear... and smiling at it!
As I close, here are some pictures that I took today of the town and the organic coffee place. I am going to relax and hang low for a couple of days so until next time, BE SAFE.
